Posted: Monday Feb 1, 2010

This paper, recently published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, focuses on the importance of proper maternal death classification when evaluating maternal mortality interventions.

The authors highlight why differentiating between direct and indirect maternal deaths when judging progress towards MDG 5 is so important and discuss why not taking this approach may lead to unrealistic expectations of effectiveness or indeed mask progress in tackling specific causes of death.
